How It's Made: Dipped Beeswax Tapers

Introducing How It’s Made - a new series sharing the materials and handcrafted techniques behind each candle we create. Since our very first beeswax candle was a taper, it felt only fitting to begin here.

The Integrity of our Ingredients

It begins, as it always does, with the beehive.

Our beeswax is thoughtfully sourced through long-standing relationships with beekeepers across mostly Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. These are partnerships built over time; rooted in trust, consistency, and a shared respect for the bees. We prioritize apiaries that focus their pollination on crops grown with minimal or no pesticides, ensuring the wax remains as pure and unaltered as possible. It’s beeswax in its most honest form: naturally aromatic and connected to the landscape it comes from.

From there, we turn to the core of every candle, the wick. We use only pure cotton wicks, free from metal cores or synthetic blends. A cotton wick burns cleanly and evenly, allowing the beeswax to perform as it should - with minimal to no soot, without interference, and without compromising the air quality around it.

Our dyes are eco-conscious and adhere to REACH standards, meeting rigorous European guidelines for environmental and human safety.

The Process

Beeswax is a material that asks for patience.

We begin by slowly melting the wax to a range of 160–170°F, warm enough to fully liquefy, but not so hot that it disturbs its natural integrity or scent. It’s a careful balance, one that helps us preserve everything we value about the wax.

If color is being added, it’s measured precisely according to our custom recipes. Each batch is adjusted with intention, striving for consistency from one pour to the next while still honoring the subtle variations that make beeswax and a lovingly handcrafted product unique.

Meanwhile, cotton wicks are prepared on our dipping racks, stretched taut and evenly spaced. This structure allows each taper to form gradually, layer by layer, in the desired formation.

Then, the dipping begins.

Each pair of tapers is dipped approximately 25 times. With every immersion into the warm wax, a new layer forms, building the candle’s diameter slowly and allowing the wax to dry between each dip. There is no rushing this part in the process. The rhythm of dipping, cooling, and repeating creates the smooth, elegant silhouette that defines our classic beeswax taper.

Inspection

Once the final dip is complete, the candles are left to rest.

They hang overnight, allowing the wax to fully set and settle. By morning, they are carefully inspected by our team of candle makers. Each pair examined for color, consistency, diameter, and any imperfections. Only those that meet our standards move forward.

From there, each taper is hand-wrapped in our signature label and tissue, prepared with the same level of care as every step before it.

And then, they are ready to make their journey to you!
